A new National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit for the WEWJA took effect on February 1, 2026.
This permit sets the environmental standards the wastewater treatment plant must meet before treated water is discharged back into Chartiers Creek.
It establishes monitoring requirements for a wide range of parameters that reflect water quality and treatment performance, including, pH, dissolved oxygen, select bacteria like fecal coliform and e. coli, nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, and metals like arsenic and iron, and emerging contaminants of concern like “forever chemicals”.
The permit also outlines how frequently samples must be collected and tested, with many parameters monitored daily or weekly through laboratory analysis. Like most updated permits, the new requirements are more stringent than previous versions as environmental standards continue to evolve.
These requirements help ensure the Authority continues to protect local waterways while maintaining compliance with state and federal environmental regulations.
