Chartiers interceptor sewer rehabilitation: phase 1 contract awarded

WEWJA is beginning work on the Chartiers Interceptor Rehabilitation Project, an important effort to strengthen one of the most critical pipelines in the regional sewer system.

The Chartiers Interceptor is a large pipe, up to 36 inches in diameter, that carries wastewater from all seven municipalities, and several upstream pump stations, to the Authority’s treatment plant.

Recent inspections using advanced cameras and multi sensor technology identified areas where the pipe has experienced structural wear and inflow and infiltration, which can reduce system capacity and increase the risk of sewer overflows during heavy rain.

Awarded on February 23, 2026

To address these issues, Phase 1 of the project will focus on the sections of pipe with the most significant structural deterioration.

These areas will be repaired using cured in place pipe lining, a trenchless rehabilitation method that creates a new structural liner inside the existing pipe. This approach restores the pipe’s strength while minimizing disruption to nearby roads and neighborhoods.

The Phase 1 construction contract was awarded on February 23, 2026, and the $1.6 million project includes support from a $400,000 Washington County Local Share Account grant.

WEWJA greatly appreciates the support of the Washington County Local Share Account Board, as well as State Representative Tim O’Neal and State Senator Camera Bartolotta, for their assistance in securing this funding to help invest in critical wastewater infrastructure. Construction is expected to be substantially complete in Fall 2026.
