About the Washington-East Washington Joint Authority

The Washington East–Washington Joint Authority (WEWJA) owns and operates a sanitary sewerage system serving the Greater Washington Area.

The service area includes the entire City of Washington and Borough of East Washington, as well as portions of Chartiers Township, South Strabane Township, Canton Township, North Franklin Township, and Amwell Township.

The sanitary sewerage system consists of one wastewater treatment plant, 11 pump stations, gravity sewers, forcemains, manholes, and grinder pumps. The wastewater treatment plant receives wastewater from the Authority’s entire service area and discharges treated effluent to Chartiers Creek, as authorized by state and federal regulators.

More about us

Operating a comprehensive wastewater system that safely collects, conveys, treats, and discharges water to the environment for communities across the Greater Washington Area.

Development services

We work with developers, builders, and property owners to ensure new projects and existing sewer repairs connect safely and compliantly to the public sewer system.

Our process includes pre-development meetings, review and approval of wastewater flow estimates, determinations on the need for sewage planning, formal sewage planning when necessary, and issuance of sewer connection permits. Early coordination helps prevent delays, ensures regulatory compliance, and protects the long-term performance of the system.
